Carbon Monoxide & Your Furnace: What Every Orange County Home Should Check

TL;DR

A gas furnace can leak carbon monoxide (CO) if the heat exchanger cracks or combustion is faulty – CO is odorless and deadly. An electric furnace produces no CO, because there is no combustion. Every home with gas appliances needs working CO detectors near bedrooms, and a burning smell, soot, or a headache when the heat runs means shut it off and call. Carbon monoxide is the one furnace topic where “wait and see” is the wrong answer. The risk is real but very manageable: it comes from one specific set of conditions, it announces itself in ways you can learn, and a cheap detector plus an annual inspection covers almost all of it. Here is the straight version, without scare tactics.

Can a furnace leak carbon monoxide?

A gas furnace can. CO is a byproduct of burning fuel, and in a healthy furnace it stays sealed inside the heat exchanger and vents safely outdoors. Two failures break that seal: a cracked heat exchanger, which can let combustion gases mix into the air blowing through your home, and faulty combustion or venting, which produces or traps more CO than the system can safely exhaust.

An electric furnace cannot leak CO. No fuel is burned, so no carbon monoxide is produced – the answer to that common search is simply no.

Do electric furnaces or electric stoves produce carbon monoxide?

No. Carbon monoxide only comes from burning fuel – natural gas, propane, oil, wood, charcoal. Electric furnaces, electric stoves, and electric space heaters produce none, because nothing combusts. (Gas stoves are a different story – they can produce some CO during use, which is one reason kitchen ventilation matters, but that is a separate topic from your furnace.) If your home is all-electric, furnace CO is not a risk you carry; if you have any gas appliance, keep reading.

What are the warning signs of a CO problem?

  • Unexplained headaches, dizziness, or nausea that improve when you leave the house – the classic pattern of low-level CO exposure.
  • A persistent burning smell when the heat runs (CO itself is odorless, but the combustion faults that produce it often are not).
  • Soot around the furnace or vents.
  • A yellow or flickering burner flame instead of steady blue – a sign of incomplete combustion.
  • Heavy condensation on windows near the furnace when it runs.

What do I do if I suspect carbon monoxide?

This part is non-negotiable. Get everyone, pets included, out to fresh air immediately. Do not restart the furnace. If anyone feels ill – headache, dizziness, confusion, nausea – call 911; CO poisoning is a medical emergency. Once everyone is safe, call a professional to find and fix the source before the furnace runs again.

How do I prevent a CO problem?

Two layers of defense cover it:

Working CO detectors. Install them near every sleeping area, test them monthly, and replace them on the manufacturer’s schedule (most units expire after 5 to 10 years). This is your alarm system – CO is odorless and invisible, so a detector is the only thing that will catch a leak while you sleep.

An annual heating inspection. A proper HVAC inspection checks the heat exchanger for cracks and verifies the burner is combusting cleanly and venting correctly. Why the first cold night of fall matters

Frequently asked questions

Do electric furnaces produce carbon monoxide?

No. Electric furnaces have no combustion, so they cannot produce CO. Only fuel-burning appliances can.

Do electric stoves produce carbon monoxide?

No. Electric stoves and cooktops produce no CO. Gas stoves can produce some during use, which is why running the range hood with a gas stove is good practice.

Where should I put CO detectors?

At minimum, near every sleeping area – outside bedroom doors – and on every level of the home. Avoid mounting them directly next to the furnace or in dead-air corners. Test monthly and replace per the manufacturer’s expiration date.

Can a dirty furnace cause carbon monoxide?

It can contribute. Dirty burners and restricted airflow cause incomplete combustion, which produces more CO, and chronic overheating stresses the heat exchanger toward cracking. This is a large part of why the annual cleaning and inspection matters.

Is a yellow burner flame dangerous?

Treat it that way. A healthy gas flame burns steady blue; yellow or flickering flames signal incomplete combustion, which produces CO. Shut the furnace off and have it inspected before running it again.
