Why is my AC running but not cooling?

The thermostat is worth a glance too, but it’s rarely the real culprit when the system is clearly powered on.

A quick way to narrow it down: walk outside and look at your condenser (the big unit against the house). Is the fan on top spinning? If the indoor fan runs but the outdoor unit is silent, you’re likely looking at an electrical problem, a breaker or a capacitor. If both units are running but the air is warm, it’s probably airflow or refrigerant.

Could it be as simple as the thermostat?

Sometimes, yes, so rule it out first. Make sure it’s set to COOL (not just “fan” or “on”), that the target temperature is actually a few degrees below the current room temperature, and that the batteries aren’t dead. A thermostat with weak batteries can run the fan without properly calling for cooling. If you’ve recently had a power blip, double-check the schedule didn’t reset.

Is the air filter clogged?

This is the single most common fixable cause, and it’s free to check. When a filter gets packed with dust and pet hair, it chokes the airflow across your system. The result is weak, room-temperature air, and if it goes on long enough, a frozen evaporator coil (more on that next). Pull your filter and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see through it, replace it, run the system for 20–30 minutes, and see if the cold air returns. Why is there ice on my AC, and no cold air?

It sounds backwards, but ice is a classic cause of warm air. If you see frost on the copper refrigerant lines or the indoor coil, your evaporator coil has frozen over, and a block of ice can’t cool your home. Freezing is usually caused by restricted airflow (that clogged filter again) or low refrigerant. The fix in the moment: switch the system to “fan only” for a few hours to thaw it, and replace the filter. If it freezes up again after that, stop. A coil that keeps freezing points to a refrigerant or airflow problem that needs a tech.

Could my AC be low on refrigerant?

If your cooling has slowly faded over a season or two rather than quitting all at once, low refrigerant is a strong suspect. Here’s the key thing most homeowners don’t realize: refrigerant isn’t consumed like fuel. Your system is a sealed loop, so if it’s low, it’s leaking. That’s why “just adding a pound of Freon” is a trap: it buys you a few weeks and vents a regulated gas into the air. A proper repair finds the leak, fixes it, and then recharges to the manufacturer’s spec. The outdoor unit is silent: now what?

If the fan on your outdoor condenser won’t spin (or you hear a low hum but no start), the two usual suspects are a tripped breaker or a failed run capacitor, the small component that gives the compressor and fan the jolt they need to start.
